Day 5115 August 2026

“pirates” of Penzance; friends/rowers cheering from China

Last night our boat was surrounded by 30+ boats in a huge area in darkness. Earlier I communicated with one boat, and the rest was quiet. In dark, a couple of them moved very close to my stern/back with BIG bright lights. My AIS kept beeping and sending me collision warning/alerts. It was a busy night fighting not just the current/wind, but also a large group of unknowns. It was a bit intimidating, but we are safe. A friend told me this morning that these are French Tuna fishing boats and the crew do not speak English or are not willing to speak English…

My friends/rowers took two gold at a regatta this morning in China. I am very happy for them! We had a short live streaming at the race banquet. Seeing the North Atlantic Ocean behind me became the highlight at the banquet.

We are getting closer to the finish, less than 200 nm. But landing can be tricky and very challenging due to reef, rocks, strong tides and many unknowns. Heck, we’ll deal with that when we get there, in 3 or 4 days.
